              <text>On April 8, 1835, &lt;a href="https://www.archivalgossip.com/collection/items/show/1" title="Charlotte Cushman"&gt;Cushman&lt;/a&gt; made her debut on the stage at the Tremont Theatre in Boston in the role of Countess Almaviva in &lt;em&gt;The Marriage of Figaro&lt;/em&gt;. While Cushmam's performance seemingly betrayed her nerves, contemporary reviews praised her originality: "Her style was her own; we could observe no appearance of imitation. On the whole, if there is musical taste and knowledge in this community to appreciate a really fine singer [...] the lady will be generally and deservedly a great favorite" (&lt;em&gt;Daily Atlas&lt;/em&gt;, April 11, 1835 qut. &lt;a href="https://www.jstor.org/stable/20779534%20" target="_blank" rel="noopener"&gt;Fletcher&lt;/a&gt;)&lt;br /&gt;Cushman was supported in her stage debut by her teacher Mr Maeder and the singer Mrs Wood – both are also regularly mentioned in reviews.</text>
