[page 1] one word of loving thanks dearest Annie for your sweet remembrance of this day for me. Sallie laid upon my pillow this morning – your lovely volume of Landor's Hellenics. & I was so pleased – this & a lovely pair of ear. rings (to match my +++ buttons & pin.) which my dear Emma gave me. & a little box of bonbons which Grace Greenwoods [sic] little girl brought me this morning. & Jamies [sic] "Glimpses" are my land marks of the day. I am very happy w [with] them

[page 2] all. but especially my books. which last forever! Thank you dear. and Jamie for remembering me so sweetly: You will have heard from Emma I suppose by this time as I know she purposed writing to you yesterday. She will have told you what a weary journey we had to New York & how cold we found it. Henry Stebbins was so delighted with his +++. he will have written to you also. I left my darling yesterday morning. & came on here. Tired, weary. foot sore. heart tired. arrived at 1. went to my rehearsal. Things bothering me very much. read the Desert Sands. which affected me most powerfully - as much

[page 3] the most artistic thing I have ever read of Mrs Prescott. & then to the Theatre. where a very fine house awaited me - although Xmas Eve - is proverbially bad Every where: came home very late. very cross. slept well & this morning awoke with stiff neck cold in my head & many miserables. I feel so lonely without my other, & much very better half. Sallie is out to dinner. & I am alone for the rest of the day. This is rest. but on this day of all others one wants somebody do they not? & the silence compared with Boston is appalling. However I hope to get some reading done now & heaven knows I have need

[page 4] I am much delighted with +++ article on Page. & what he says of me. is wondrous. do you think that an Editor note might put my name at the bottom of the page. or is it sufficient? I very much want a likeness of Emerson. with his own writing presented to me. & one of Longfellow & one of Holmes. & Lowell. & Whittier. do you think you could accomplish this for me? against my coming back in April?— Now God bless you dear give my best love to Jamie. & believe me ever most affectionately
Your attached Charlotte
