Charlotte Saunders Cushman "of the Walnut Street Theater."

Oil on canvas ; 20 x 17 1/2 (3 x 5) inches ; Framed: 29 5/8 x 26 5/8 x (3 3/4+1)4 3/4 inches. Cushman was the stage manager of the Walnut Street Theater in Philadelphia from 1842 to 1844, and this portrait was painted during that time. The Folger Shakespeare Library has an almost identical portrait of Charlotte Cushman, also painted by Sully, which was donated to them in 1936 by Mrs. Vincent Cushman, wife of Charlotte's nephew. Brewster, Anne Anne M. H. (Anne Maria Hampton), 1819-1892, former owner
Brewster donated the painting to the Library Company of Philadelphia.
