I have been so dilatory & neglectful about this
extract for Mrs Alfer [?]. will you, like a dear good soul forward it to her. I am not able to do any thing "out of my own head" which is much 'muddled [?]' when it is

[page 2] not for 'o' care. I only hope I am not too late. Beg her to forgive me. in New of circumstances +++ you may Explain to Me. a friend [?] sent me any quantity of autograph paper to sign - I never knew what a tiresome name it was before. or I might I have signed it away long ago. But such as [?] it is. I only

[page 3] hope it may do some little good to the cause of the suffering though for my part I cannot +++ justice of +++ out for France [?] each or a pound of tobacco – to these "National Guards" who are behaving now so badly. +++ I may be mistaken & an old fogy but I am Yours affec [affectionately]
