Description

In a letter from Elizabeth to her sister Arabel Malton Barrett from October 22, 1852, Browning describes the relationship between Charlotte Cushman and Matilda Hays a "female marriage."
The Brownings lived in Italy for some time, in Florence (Casa Guidi), and in 43 Via Bocca Leone in Rome. Their correspondence with Isa Blagden repeatedly mentions Charlotte Cushman and Harriet Hosmer, and gives insights into the Rome expatriate community.
Robert browning uses the abbreviation "Ba" to refer to her.
