Description
Cushman writes the poem in December 1843 and publishes it in January 1844. There is no entry in Macready's diary, and it is unclear how Macready reacted to Cushman's lyrical praise.

Merrill comments on the poem as part of Cushman's reputation management strategy: "Immediately after their New York run she wrote a poem about her famous costar that she published in the January 1844 issue of the Anglo American, in which she praised Macready's 'all matchless skill.' While paying tribute to the esteemed actor, Cushman was engaging in her own form of self-promotion. All who read her laudatory poem would remember her as the actress who had recently performed with the British star, and her name would continue to be linked with his even while he toured without her" (67)
