Text

TO MISS CUSHMAN.—HELENA'S SONG.
____________
"It were all one that I should love a bright particular star and
Think to wod it, he is so above me."—HELENA.

I wake from a deep trance of bliss—
I start from a sorrowless dream—
As one whom fatal abyss
Hath drawn to its perilous stream.

I strive to suppress my vain grief,
I nerve my lorn heart to despair;
Yet, ah! E'en my soul's disbelief
Recalls thee, impassioned there.

I have thought of thee, only to weep,
As we sadden, yet gaze on the sky—
As we mournfully, hopelessly seek
The track of a planet on high.

If my soul for one hour could forget
The chasm fate bids intervene,
This waking for ever hath set
Its seal to my spirit's young dream.
