"[I]n October 1844, with little money and no firm prospects, but armed with seventy letters of recommendation. she sailed for England. Having declined Macready's invitation to join his troupe in Paris in order to avoid rialy with his leading lady, Helen Faucit, Miss Cushman was down to her last sovereign when J. M. Maddox offered her the chance to play opposite the celebrated Edwin Forrest at his Princess's Theatre in London- She insisted on a starring role, however, and on Feb. 14, 1845, she appeared as Bianca [...] she gained absolute dominion in a matter of weeks."
