Sanitary Commission Performance, Sept 12, 1863

The Library Company of Philadelphia collects the following original wording from a document that advertises Cushman's performance. The document was found in a scrapbook:
"Academy of Music. Benefit of the United States Sanitary Commission on Saturday eve’ng, Sept. 12, ’63. : On which occasion the distinguished tragedienne, Miss Charlotte Cushman will appear in her world-renowned rendition of Lady Macbeth! Miss Cushman now makes a return to the stage for most positively one night only, expressly for the benefit of the fund of the above commission, and tenders her artistic services without fee or reward! The eminent tradedian, Mr. Edwin Booth has, in the kindest manner, voluntarily tendered his valuable services, and will appear in the character of Macbeth. ... Prices of admission: Parquet and parquet circle, $1 00 ... Private boxes, 20 00 Box office open for the sale of reserved seats, daily, from 9, A.M. to 4, P.M. until performance. Tickets can also be procured at all the principal hotels. Doors open at quarter-past 7. Commence at 8 precisely"

"Cushman had returned to America for a series of benefit performances as Lady Macbeth, the role that had launched her career twenty-eight years before. Those sold-out appearances in four northern cities would net over eight thousand dollars for the Sanitary Commission. She hoped to recite the ode on the eve of her return to Europe." (Gollin 39)
