Stebbins's Biography about Charlotte Cushman and Related Material

This part of the exhibit draws attention to Stebbins's biography of Cushman, published in 1878, and its writing process. Stebbins' letters to Sidney Lanier allow us to understand her motivation (and her trepidation) in writing this memoir of her late partner. These and other letters also provide insights into Stebbins' collection of sources: her inquiries directed to people for whom she suspects that they could share relevant information, and related documents to be included in the biography.

One collection of the Library of Congress is helpful in particular: Jennie Lorenz did some research in the first half of the 20th century and transcribed some of the letters of Stebbins to Lanier or kept notes on her observations. Her transcripts are included in this exhibitions, they are annotated and cover the letters and topics that were of interest to her back then.
