Description
On April 8, 1835, Cushman made her debut on the stage at the Tremont Theatre in Boston in the role of Countess Almaviva in The Marriage of Figaro. While Cushmam's performance seemingly betrayed her nerves, contemporary reviews praised her originality: "Her style was her own; we could observe no appearance of imitation. On the whole, if there is musical taste and knowledge in this community to appreciate a really fine singer [...] the lady will be generally and deservedly a great favorite" (Daily Atlas, April 11, 1835 qut. Fletcher)
Cushman was supported in her stage debut by her teacher Mr Maeder and the singer Mrs Wood – both are also regularly mentioned in reviews.
