Description

Charlotte's sister performs as Juliet in Romeo & Juliet.
She is forced into marriage with Nelson Merriman when she is 14 and he is in his 60s. He leaves her and the child in debt. With the help of her family, Susan files for divorce. Charlotte supports her family financially and arranges engagements on stage for her sister. Susan is celebrated by the press for her Juliet performances. Recurrently, press reports speculate about her "private life" (marriage, widow, "real Romeo"). In 1848, Susan marries James S. Muspratt who is a wealthy Liverpool scientist and is often referred to as "Dr." Her child Ida dies in June 1854 (Leach 265).
Charlotte Cushman is not very fond of the Muspratts which she reveals in letters to Rosalie in the 1870s.
